Women's History Month Spotlight: Stacy Kennedy-Unlocking the Healing Power of Touch
Today we are sitting down with Stacy Kennedy owner of Reflexology by Stacy. So tell us what inspired you to become a reflexologist, and how did your journey lead to opening your own private practice?
My journey to becoming a Reflexologist was a long one, in that it took time to be able to actualize it. I became interested in Reflexology about eight years ago. As a nurse, I found it fascinating that there was a modality that could combine my knowledge of the body and its workings while also incorporating energy work and serving as a complementary tool for healing.
In 2021, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder and decided it was finally time to seek out ways to not only aid my own health but also offer something to those like me who need standard medical care but want to enhance it with natural methods as well. I began working out of Soul Yoga on a once-weekly basis while continuing my nursing career. Over time, I realized that I needed to shift to Reflexology full-time, as my healthcare career was keeping me sick. The stress of working in a system I no longer aligned with was too much to bear. I love medicine and helping people, but I felt the healthcare system was not offering a complete picture of all the possibilities for mental and physical health.
I require medication and seek physicians and will continue to do so for the rest of my life to treat various disorders I have, but I also seek ways to take charge of feeling my best mentally and physically. This mission became the foundation of my practice. Opening my own office allowed me to offer more flexible hours, longer sessions, and a cozy, welcoming space with a separate waiting room and two treatment rooms for my clients.
For those unfamiliar with reflexology, can you explain what it is and how it benefits overall wellness?
Reflexology is based on the theory of zones within the body that run from the top of the head down to the feet, similar to the meridian lines in acupuncture. Pressure is applied using the fingers or thumbs to specific points on the feet, hands, face, or ears that correspond to various organs and body systems. This stimulates nerve pathways and energy lines with the goal of creating homeostasis (or balance) within the body.
Reflexology activates the parasympathetic nervous system—our ideal state of "rest and digest." Life stressors wreak havoc on our bodies, minds, and spirits, and Reflexology provides the body with the opportunity to heal naturally. It is a deeply relaxing treatment that aids in pain relief, improves sleep, increases circulation, enhances oxygenation of cells, and regulates hormones. It also promotes the release of feel-good hormones such as endorphins, serotonin, and melatonin while reducing cortisol (stress hormones).
There are very few contraindications to Reflexology, making it accessible to almost everyone, from infants to the elderly. The only clothing that needs to be removed is socks and shoes, which makes it even more accessible.
What sets your practice apart from other wellness services in your area? Do you specialize in any particular techniques or conditions?
I am one of only a small few on the entire Eastern Shore who practices Reflexology as a standalone service. Additionally, my background as a nurse since 1995 gives me a deeper understanding of my clients’ health conditions and the anatomy and physiology of the body. While I do not act as a nurse during sessions, this knowledge benefits my clients greatly.
I am certified in Feet, Hands, Face, and Ear Reflexology, as well as Reflexology for children. I have taken additional courses in Indian Head Massage and Body Reflexology. Currently, I am exploring certifications in Reflexology for Trauma and Addiction, as well as Neuro Reflexology. Additionally, I have completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training and am Level 2 Reiki attuned.
What was the biggest challenge in starting your private practice, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was simply taking the leap. Starting a business requires energy, time, financial resources, and faith in yourself. Every aspect—from performing sessions to marketing, managing finances, maintaining the space, and ensuring client comfort—falls on you.
While it is intense, it is truly a labor of love. I remind myself of the impact I can have on my clients’ well-being. Knowing that I can help someone feel better keeps me motivated. Balancing work and personal life as a sole business owner is a challenge, but I continue to refine my approach to ensure both my practice and my well-being thrive.
I have experienced your healing hands and was granted great relief. Can you share a success story from a client who experienced significant improvement through reflexology?
Any client who reports reduced pain or stress is a success story to me. I never promise a cure but instead provide a tool for healing and relaxation. Many clients have had wonderful outcomes after their sessions, further solidifying my belief in Reflexology’s benefits. I believe our bodies hold wisdom for healing, and I am simply a vessel with a skill set to help facilitate that process.
What can someone expect during their first reflexology session with you?
I begin by explaining the techniques and what to expect, reassuring clients that Reflexology is neither painful nor ticklish. I encourage open communication throughout the session. Clients complete an intake form, which we review together to address any concerns and focus areas.
Sessions take place in a cozy environment with soft music, dim lighting, pillows, and optional eye pillows. I also offer herbal teas to extend relaxation beyond the session. At the end, I discuss aftercare and potential future sessions, and if needed, I refer clients to other holistic practitioners who may complement their healing journey.
How do you integrate reflexology with other holistic healing practices, if at all?
During sessions, I incorporate Reiki energy healing, and I often recommend yoga and breathing techniques tailored to my clients’ needs. Additionally, I refer clients to trusted holistic practitioners when necessary.
What advice would you give to someone considering reflexology for the first time?
Just try it! You don’t need to believe in Reflexology’s theories to experience its benefits. Some people worry about the appearance of their feet, but I focus on health, not aesthetics. Even clients who initially dislike having their feet touched often find they enjoy Reflexology. If feet are a no-go, I offer hand, face, and ear sessions as well. It’s worth trying—you may discover profound benefits and love it!
What are your future goals for your practice, and how do you see it growing in the next few years?
I would love to work more with clients dealing with trauma, mental health concerns, and autoimmune disorders. These areas are deeply interconnected, and more holistic resources are needed. My goal is not to replace standard care but to provide complementary support. When we find homeostasis, we feel our best mentally, physically, and spiritually. I want to help more people experience relaxation and pain relief through Reflexology.
How can people connect with you and book a session? Do you offer any special promotions for new clients?
People can book sessions through my website: reflexologybystacy.clinicsense.com I offer a 20% discount year-round for anyone working in Downtown Salisbury to support the local community. Gift certificates and physical gift cards are available, and I run promotions throughout the year for holidays and events. My rates are accessible, ranging from $25 for a 30-minute session to $125 for a two-hour session.
